BACKGROUND: This study aims to investigate the effects of a conditioned medium (CM) from human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (HuMSCs) cultivated in gelatin sponge (GS-HuMSCs-CM) on hair growth in a mouse model. METHODS: CM was collected from the HuMSCs cultivated in a monolayer or in a gelatin sponge. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), keratinocyte growth factor (KGF), and hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) levels in CMs were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs). A hair loss model by a C57 BL/6J mouse was prepared. The effects of GS-HuMSCs-CM and HuMSCs on hair regrowth in mice were investigated by intradermal injection in the depilated back skin with normal saline (NS) as the control. The time for hair regrowth and full covering in depilated areas was observed, and the hair growth was evaluated histologically and by grossly measuring hair length and diameter. RESULTS: Compared with monolayer cultured cells, the three-dimensional (3D) culture of HuMSCs in gelatin sponge drastically increased VEGF, IGF-1, KGF, and HGF production. GS-HuMSCs-CM and HuMSCs injection both promoted hair regeneration in mice, while GS-HuMSCs-CM presented more enhanced effects in hair length, hair diameter, and growth rate. GS-HuMSCs-CM significantly promoted angiogenesis in injected skin areas, which might also contribute to faster hair regrowth. CONCLUSION: GS-HuMSCs-CM exerted significant effects on inducing hair growth and promoted skin angiogenesis in C57BL/6J mice.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Androgenic alopecia (AGA) is the most prevalent form of hair loss in clinical practice and affects the physical and psychological well-being of adolescents. Paeonia lactiflora Pallas (PL), which is widely used in traditional Chinese medicine, enhances blood function and promotes hair growth, and ellagic acid (EA), a polyphenol in PL extract, shows strong antioxidant, anti-aging, and anti-inflammatory properties and also plays a role in the treatment of various skin conditions. However, its role and mechanism of action in AGA remain unclear. AIM OF THE STUDY: To determine whether EA can rescue slow hair regeneration by regulating dihydrotestosterone (DHT)-induced ferroptosis in AGA mice and clarify the effect of EA on DHT-induced ferroptosis in dermal papilla cells (DPCs). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Male C57BL/6 mice were used to establish a DHT-induced AGA mouse model, whereas DPCs were used to establish a DHT-induced cellular model. Thereafter, we investigated the therapeutic mechanism of action of EA via immunofluorescence, western blot analysis, immunohistochemistry, electron microscopy, and molecular docking. RESULTS: EA stimulated hair regeneration in mice and reversed DHT-induced increases in iron content, lipid peroxidation, and DHT-induced mitochondrial dysfunction by activating the Wnt/ß-catenin signaling pathway. Further, ß-catenin knockdown suppressed the inhibitory effect of EA on DHT-induced ferroptosis in DPCs. CONCLUSION: EA inhibits DHT-induced ferroptosis and promotes hair regrowth in mice by activating the Wnt/ß-catenin signaling pathway. Thus, it has potential for use as a treatment option for AGA.

Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is a prevalent disease in worldwide, local application or oral are often used to treat AGA, however, effective treatments for AGA are currently limited. In this work, we observed the promoting the initial anagen phase effect of pilose antler extract (PAE) on hair regeneration in AGA mice. We found that PAE accelerated hair growth and increased the degree of skin blackness by non-invasive in vivo methods including camera, optical coherence tomography and dermoscopy. Meanwhile, HE staining of sagittal and coronal skin sections revealed that PAE augmented the quantity and length of hair follicles, while also enhancing skin thickness and hair papilla diameter. Furthermore, PAE facilitated the shift of the growth cycle from the telogen to the anagen phase and expedited the proliferation of hair follicle stem cells and matrix cells in mice with AGA. This acceleration enabled the hair follicles to enter the growth phase at an earlier stage. PAE upregulated the expression of the sonic hedgehog (SHH), smoothened receptor, glioma-associated hemolog1 (GLI1), and downregulated the expression of bone morphogenetic protein 4 (BMP4), recombinant mothers against decapentaplegic homolog (Smad) 1 and 5 phosphorylation. This evidence suggests that PAE fosters hair growth and facilitates the transition of the growth cycle from the telogen to the anagen phase in AGA mice. This effect is achieved by enhancing the proliferation of follicle stem cells and matrix cells through the activation of the SHH/GLI pathway and suppression of the BMP/Smad pathway.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to investigate the protective effect of Silibinin-loaded polymeric micelles from human hair against UV-B radiation. METHODS: Eight formulations with different concentrations of Silibinin, Pluronic F-127, and Labrasol-Labrafil were made by a solvent evaporation method, and the selected formulation was chosen by examining their properties like particle size and loading efficiency. Six groups of human hair, including a group that received the selected formulation, were exposed to UV-B radiation and by calculating its factors such as peak-to-valley roughness, RMS roughness, FTIR, and the amount of protein loss, the protective effect of the selected formulation was judged. RESULTS: According to the results, the loading efficiency and particle size of the selected formulation were 45.34% and 43.19 nm. The Silibinin release profile had two parts, fast and slow, which were suitable for creating a drug depot on hair. Its zeta potential also confirmed the minimum electrostatic interference between the formulation and hair surface. The zeta potential of selected formulation was -5.9 mv. Examination of AFM images showed that the selected formulation was able to prevent the increase in peak-to-valley roughness and RMS roughness caused by UV-B radiation. RMS roughness after 600 h of UV radiation in Groups 5 and 6 was significantly lower than the negative control group and the amount of this factor did not differ significantly between 0 and 600, so it can be concluded that the selected formulation containing Silibinin and the positive control group was able to prevent the increase of RMS roughness and hair destruction. In other hands, the two positive control groups and the selected formulation containing Silibinin were able to effectively reduce hair protein loss. CONCLUSION: Silibinin-loaded polymeric micelles were able to effectively protect hair from structural and chemical changes caused by UV-B radiation.

BACKGROUND: The oil of the grass Cyperus rotundus (purple nutsedge) is an effective and safe treatment option for a variety of conditions. It has anti-inflammatory and antipigmenting properties. There have been no clinical trials comparing topical C. rotundus oil with skin-lightening treatments for axillary hyperpigmentation. AIM: To assess the efficacy of C. rotundus essential oil (CREO) in treating axillary hyperpigmentation, and compare with another active treatment hydroquinone (HQ) and a placebo (cold cream) in this study. METHODS: The study included 153 participants, who were assigned to one of three study groups: CREO, HQ group or placebo group. A tri-stimulus colorimeter was used to assess pigmentation and erythema. Two independent experts completed the Physician Global Assessment, and the patients completed a self-assessment questionnaire. RESULTS: CREO had significantly (P < 0.001) better depigmenting effects than HQ. CREO and HQ did not differ significantly in terms of depigmentation effects (P > 0.05); however, there were statistically significant differences in anti-inflammatory effects and decrease in hair growth (P < 0.05) in favour of CREO. CONCLUSIONS: CREO is a cost-effective and safe treatment for axillary hyperpigmentation.

Ginsenoside Rg4 is a rare ginsenoside that is naturally found in ginseng, and exhibits a wide range of biological activities including antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties in several cell types. The purpose of this study was to use an in vivo model of hair follicle (HF)-mimic based on a human dermal papilla (DP) spheroid system prepared by three-dimensional (3D) culture and to investigate the effect of Rg4 on the hair-inductive properties of DP cells. Treatment of the DP spheroids with Rg4 (20 to 50 µg/ml) significantly increased the viability and size of the DP spheres in a dose-dependent manner. Rg4 also increased the mRNA and protein expression of DP signature genes that are related to hair growth including ALP, BMP2, and VCAN in the DP spheres. Analysis of the signaling molecules and luciferase reporter assays further revealed that Rg4 induces the activation of phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K)/AKT and the inhibitory phosphorylation of GSK3ß, which activates the WNT/ß-catenin signaling pathway. These results correlated with not only the increased nuclear translocation of ß-catenin following the treatment of the DP spheres with Rg4 but also the significant elevation of mRNA expression of the downstream target genes of the WNT/ß-catenin pathway including WNT5A, ß-catenin, and LEF1. In conclusion, these results demonstrated that ginsenoside Rg4 promotes the hair-inductive properties of DP cells by activating the AKT/GSK3ß/ß-catenin signaling pathway in DP spheres, suggesting that Rg4 could be a potential natural therapy for hair growth.

Liposomal honokiol isolated from the genus Magnolia has been found to have antiangiogenic, anti-inflammatory and antitumor properties. However, there has no report on its role in hair growth. Hair follicles are life-long cycled organelles that go through from anagen, catagen and telogen stages and are regulated by diverse signaling pathways, including Wnt/ß-catenin, Notch, Epidermal growth factor (EGF) and Sonic hegehog (SHH). Wnt signals are essential for the initiation of hair follicle placode development and a new potential target of hair loss treatment. This study was designed to investigate the effect of liposomal honokiol (Lip-honokiol) on inducing hair anagen. We identified the hair grew out in advance in the shaving area of C57BL/6N mice after the treatment of liposomal honokiol (Lip-honokiol) by daily abdominal injection. We first demonstrated that Lip-Honokiol activated the Wnt3a/ß-catenin pathway and downregulated the transforming growth factor-ß1 (TGF-ß1) to promote hair growth in mice via immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence staining. These findings suggest that Lip-honokiol activated the Wnt/ß-catenin pathway and accelerated the transfer from the telogen to anagen stage and finally promoted the hair growth.

The aim of this work was to optimize our natural hair dyeing system which we described in our previous work and to compare with other dyeing systems. Therefore, we investigated concentration limits of matcha and mordant and compared this new dyeing method with commercial permanent systems on the market. Completely unpigmented hair tresses were dyed with matcha powder (camelia sinensis) and iron(II)-lactate. To investigate the wash fastness and concentration limits, the differently dyed hair tresses were spectrophotometrically measured. The comparison of the damage potential for which cysteic acid is an indicator was measured by NIR. The concentration of matcha and mordant are responsible for the intensity of the color results. The higher the matcha or the mordant concentration, the darker the color results of the dyed hair tresses. Hair damage of matcha mordant dyeing is comparable with results of commercial permanent hair coloration systems. Moreover, the results of wash fastness of matcha mordant dyed hair tresses is comparable and even better by tendency to permanent colored hair tresses.

In clinical practice, micronized progesterone (MP) is frequently recommended to treat signs and symptoms of skin and hair aging in menopausal women. The aim of this comprehensive review was to evaluate whether topically or systemically applied MP may effectively prevent or slow down signs of skin and hair aging. Three out of six identified studies reported an impact of MP on skin aging markers in menopausal women. Of these, two studies reported a benefit: one for topically applied MP, another for systemically applied combined menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) comprising MP as progestogen for endometrial protection. Tolerability and safety of MP were good. However, there was no study investigating the impact of MP on menopausal scalp hair. In conclusion, delay of skin aging comprises lifestyle adjustment, antioxidants, and several esthetic procedures. In menopausal women, MHT displays beneficial effects on skin aging. There is poor quality but promising scientific evidence for MP displaying anti-aging skin effects in menopausal women. However, good quality studies are needed.

Sweet potato shochu oil is one of the by-products of sweet potato shochu production. We investigated the functionality and industrial use of shochu oil as a food-derived raw material. Because of the increased incidence of self-consciousness in people owing to thinning hair, in this study, we examined the hair growth-inducing effects of shochu oil. Minoxidil, the only topical medication approved for hair growth treatment in Japan, was used as a control for the evaluation of hair growth-promoting activity of shochu oil. Human follicle dermal papilla cells treated with shochu oil showed upregulated expression of vascular endothelial growth factor in a concentration-dependent manner, indicating that shochu oil induced the activation of the hair growth cycle. In vivo, epidermal treatment with shochu oil also promoted hair growth in C3H mice. More than 35 components were detected in shochu oil via gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The main components, accounting for 98.5% of shochu oil, were as follows, in order of decreasing concentration: ethyl palmitate, ethyl linoleate, ethyl oleate, ethyl stearate, ethyl caprate, ethyl laurate, ethyl myristate, and ethyl α-linolenate. Among these, ethyl palmitate, ethyl linoleate, and ethyl α-linolenate promoted hair growth in C3H mice. These results indicate that shochu oil can be used as a hair restorer. To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first to demonstrate the hair growth-promoting activity of shochu oil.

BACKGROUND: Cepharanthine (CEP), a compound extracted from the vine Stephania cephalantha, is commonly prescribed to treat alopecia areata; however, the scientific evidence for its efficacy is limited. AIM: To investigate the effect of CEP and its structural analogues on human hair growth in vitro. METHODS: The effects of CEP and three of its structural analogues on the proliferation of human dermal papilla cells (hDPCs) and human outer root sheath cells (hORSCs) were investigated. Their effects on vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) expression were also assessed by real-time PCR. Activation of pathways leading to VEGF expression, such as intracellular Ca2+ mobilization and hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF) expression, was also characterized. RESULTS: CEP and two of its structural analogues significantly stimulated the growth of hDPCs but not hORSCs. Moreover, CEP and all three structural analogues significantly induced the expression of VEGF in hDPCs. CEP increased the intracellular Ca2+ concentration in hDPCs. CEP also increased the expression of HIF-1α and HIF-2α and induced the expression of HIF-responsive genes in hDPCs, even under normoxia. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that CEP and its structural analogues have the potential to restore hair growth by promoting the proliferation of hDPCs and increasing their expression of VEGF.

BACKGROUND: As a traditional and typical prescription of prominently activating blood circulation to remove blood stasis, Xuefu Zhuyu decoction (XZD) consists of 15 kinds of herbal medicine. Clinical investigations have showed that XZD could significantly promote the new hair generation of alopecia areata (AA) patients characterized by Qi stagnation and blood stasis. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was executed to determine whether the mechanisms by which XZD stimulated newborn hair were related to its anti-inflammatory effects. METHODS: Clinical AA individuals were recruited to confirm the efficies of XZD. High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis was performed to qualitatively and quantitatively determine the contents of 15 compounds in XZD. Schrodinger molecular docking and in vivo surface plasmon resonance (SPR) techniques were used to evaluate the potential binding properties of compounds to target proteins. C3H/HeJ mice were randomly assigned to groups control, AA, and the XZD administration (6.5, 13.0 and 26.0 g/kg/d). Except for mice in control group, all the mice in the other groups were treated with a 21-day chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) induced AA. Hematoxylin-eosin (H&E) staining was performed to determine the degree of pathological damage to the skin. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was performed to detect levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6), interleukin-1 beta (IL-1ß) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) and in serum and skin tissues. Western blot, immunohistochemistry and quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) were used to examine the expression levels of IL-6, IL-1ß, TNF-α and osteopontin proteins and genes in skin tissues. RESULTS: XZD could visibly promote hair regeneration of AA patients. The potential active ingredients in XZD prescription included at least amygdalin, hydroxysafflor yellow A, kaempferide, ferulic acid, catalpol, verbascoside, ß-ecdysone, platycodin D, paeoniflorin, naringin, neohesperidin, liquiritin, glycyrrhizic acid, saikosaponin A and saikosaponin D. The results of molecular docking and SPR analysis showed that verbascoside, liquiritin, kaempferide and amygdalin showed the best potential binding properties with IL-6, IL-1ß, TNF-α and osteopontin, respectively. Pathological evaluation showed that compared with the CUMS group, the administration of XZD significantly promoted hair regeneration, evidenced by increased number of skin hair follicles in C3H/HeJ AA mice. Compared with control group, ELISA data showed that the levels of IL-6, IL-1ß and TNF-α in serum and skin tissues of CUMS induced AA mice were significantly increased, while XZD administration dramatically restrained the contents of the three pro-inflammatory factors. Western blot, immunohistochemistry, and qRT-PCR results further demonstrated that XZD administration notably down-regulated the protein and gene expression levels of osteopontin, IL-6, IL-1ß and TNF-α in comparation with CUMS group. CONCLUSION: XZD could dramatically ameliorate CUMS-induced AA damage in the skin of C3H/HeJ mice, possibly by suppressing the levels of IL-6, IL-1ß, TNF-α and osteopontin.

Gefitinib (Iressa), is a selective epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI), used in the targeted treatment of locally advanced or metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Skin toxicity is the major adverse effect observed in patients treated with EGFR-targeted TKIs such as gefitinib and erlotinib. To date, a corresponding skin animal model has not been established to address the mechanisms of these effects. Therefore, we analyzed the skin rash phenotype and its pathological features in Brown Norway (BN) rats treated with gefitinib 2.5 mg, 5.0 mg, or 10 mg/100 g/day for 4 weeks. We found that treatment with gefitinib led to weight loss, rash, itching, and hair loss in a dose-dependent manner. We also investigated the skin pathology and found that the animal model showed thickening of the epidermis, loss of moisture, and apoptosis of keratinocytes. Immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry, and analysis of monocytes and leukocytes in the blood revealed increased macrophage infiltration was associated with the cutaneous toxicities induced by gefitinib in the BN rats. Finally, we found that gefitinib-induced cutaneous toxicity is significantly associated with three inflammatory cytokines known to be secreted by activated macrophages, TREM-1, CINC-2, and CINC-3.

The present study aimed to investigate the molecular mechanism of quercitrin, a major constituent of Hottuynia cordata extract, for its hair growth stimulating activities in cultured human dermal papilla cells (hDPCs). Quercitrin enhanced the cell viability and cellular energy metabolism in cultured hDPCs by stimulating the production of NAD(P)H and mitochondrial membrane potential (ΔΨ). The expression of Bcl2, an essential marker for anagen hair follicle and cell survival, was increased by quercitrin treatment. Quercitrin also increased the cell proliferation marker Ki67. The expression of growth factors-such as bFGF, KGF, PDGF-AA, and VEGF-were increased by quercitrin both in mRNA and protein levels. In addition, quercitrin was found to increase the phosphorylation of Akt, Erk, and CREB in cultured hDPCs, while inhibitors of MAPKs reversed the effects of quercitrin. Finally, quercitrin stimulated hair shaft growth in cultured human hair follicles. Our data obtained from present study are in line with those previously reported and demonstrate that quercitrin is (one of) the active compound(s) of Hottuynia cordata extract which showed hair growth promoting effects. It is strongly suggested that the hair growth stimulating activity of quercitrin was exerted by enhancing the cellular energy metabolism, increasing the production of growth factors via activation of MAPK/CREB signaling pathway.

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy has been considered as a promising treatment for androgenetic alopecia (AGA). The aim of the study was comparative evaluation of the clinical efficacy of PRP-therapy, minoxidil, and their combination in the treatment of men with AGA and to evaluate the effects of PRP on the proliferation of hair follicle (HF) cells in skin biopsy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study involved 69 men who were divided into 3 groups who received PRP therapy, minoxidil, and their combination. The clinical efficacy of the therapy was evaluated by the dynamics of morphometric of hairs. To assess cell proliferation antibodies to ß-catenin, CD34, Ki67, and to Dkk-1 were used. RESULTS: PRP treatment was more effective than minoxidil therapy (p = 0.005). Complex therapy turned out to be more effective than minoxidil monotherapy (p < 0.0001) and PRP monotherapy (p = 0.007). After applying PRP the absolute and relative values of the ß-catenin and CD34 expression area increased; an increase in Ki67+ index was also significant. CONCLUSIONS: PRP can be considered as a treatment option for AGA. Combined PRP and minoxidil use seems promising for the treatment of AGA. PRP increase in the proliferative activity of HF cells and improves hair morphology in patients with AGA.

This current study investigates the facilitative effects and mechanisms of decursin, a major component of Angelica gigas Nakai (AGN), and AGN root extract on hair growth in mice. We perform high-performance liquid chromatography on AGN extract to show it contains 7.3% decursin. Hairs in mouse dorsal skin are shaved distilled in water, 0.15% decursin, and 2% AGN root extract (0.15% decursin in the diluted extract) and topically applied twice a day for 17 days. Hematoxylin and eosin staining are done to examine the morphological changes in the hair follicles. To compare the effects of decursin and AGN extract on inflammatory cytokines in the dorsal skin, Western blot analysis and immunohistochemistry for tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α) and interleukin (IL)-1ß as pro-inflammatory cytokines, and IL-4 and IL-13 as anti-inflammatory cytokines are conducted. The results show that the application of decursin and AGN extract confer effects on hair growth. Hair growth is significantly facilitated from seven days after the treatments compared to that in the control group, and completely grown hair was found 17 days after the treatments. The protein levels and immunoreactivity of TNF-α and IL-1ß in this case are significantly decreased, whereas the IL-4 and IL-13 levels and immunoreactivity are significantly increased compared to those in the control group. Additionally, high-mobility group box 1, an inflammatory mediator, is elevated by the topical application of decursin and AGN extract. Taken together, the treatment of mouse dorsal skin with AGE root extract containing decursin promotes hair growth by regulating pro- and/or anti-inflammatory cytokines. We, therefore, suggest that AGN root extract as well as decursin can be utilized as materials for developing hair growth-facilitating treatments.

BACKGROUND: The conditioned media from adipocyte-derived mesenchymal stem cells-conditioned media (ADSC-CM) contains cytokines and growth factors that stimulate hair regeneration. OBJECTIVE: We evaluated the efficacy and safety of human ADSC-CM treatment on patients who underwent nonablative fractional laser for the treatment of androgenetic alopecia (AGA). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty patients who underwent nonablative fractional laser treatment were topically administered either ADSC-CM or placebo solution. As a primary outcome, phototrichograms were taken to measure changes in hair density at each visit. In addition, global improvement scores (GISs) were compared by clinical digital photographs, which were taken at the initial and final visits, and assessed by 2 independent dermatologists. Finally, the investigator's improvement score was measured by questionnaire response during the final visit. RESULTS: Hair density comparisons during the treatment period revealed that the ADSC-CM group had significantly higher final densities compared with the placebo group. The GIS of the ADSC-CM group was also significantly higher than the placebo group. Finally, no adverse effects associated with the application of ADSC-CM were noted during the study. CONCLUSION: The application of ADSC-CM after nonablative fractional laser treatment accelerated increases in hair density and volume in AGA patients.

Conventional therapeutic applications of mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) focus on cell replacement and differentiation; however, increasing evidence suggests that most of their therapeutic effects are carried out by their various secretions. This study investigated the application of conditioned medium (CM) from human umbilical cord blood-derived MSCs (hUCB-MSCs) to improve hair growth and developed a method to reliably produce this optimized CM. Primed MSC-derived CM (P-CM) with combinations of TGF-ß1 and LiCl was optimized by comparing its effects on the cell viability of dermal papilla cells (DPCs). P-CM significantly increased the viability of DPCs compared to CM. The secretion of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in DPCs was regulated by the macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) in the P-CM secreted by MSCs. These findings suggest that P-CM can improve the efficacy in hair growth via a paracrine mechanism and that MIF in P-CM exerts hair growth-promoting effects via a VEGF-related ß-catenin and p-GSK-3ß [SER9] signaling pathway. Furthermore, clinical trials have shown that 5% P-CM improved androgenetic alopecia through producing an increased hair density, thickness, and growth rate, suggesting that this topical agent may be a novel and effective treatment option for patients with androgenetic alopecia.

We propose a novel keratin treatment of human hair by its aqueous mixtures with natural halloysite clay nanotubes. The loaded clay nanotubes together with free keratin produce micrometer-thick protective coating on hair. First, colloidal and structural properties of halloysite/keratin dispersions and the nanotube loaded with this protein were investigated. Above the keratin isoelectric point (pH = 4), the protein adsorption into the positive halloysite lumen is favored because of the electrostatic attractions. The ζ-potential magnitude of these core-shell particles increased from -35 (in pristine form) to -43 mV allowing for an enhanced colloidal stability (15 h at pH = 6). This keratin-clay tubule nanocomposite was used for the immersion treatment of hair. Three-dimensional-measuring laser scanning microscopy demonstrated that 50-60% of the hair surface coverage can be achieved with 1 wt % suspension application. Hair samples have been exposed to UV irradiation for times up to 72 h to explore the protection capacity of this coating by monitoring the cysteine oxidation products. The nanocomposites of halloysite and keratin prevent the deterioration of human hair as evident by significant inhibition of cysteic acid. The successful hair structure protection was also visually confirmed by atomic force microscopy and dark-field hyperspectral microscopy. The proposed formulation represents a promising strategy for a sustainable medical coating on the hair, which remediates UV irradiation stress.
